Conventions aren’t just about attending panels or dressing up—they’re also a shopping haven for unique merchandise and collectibles. Vendors bring exclusive items, such as limited-edition anime prints, rare action figures, and handmade cosplay props. Budgeting is crucial. While $50 may sound like a lot, it can disappear quickly between meals, souvenirs, and impulse buys. Plan to set aside money for food, merchandise, and emergencies. If you’re cosplaying, account for costume materials or repairs, and if you’re traveling, budget for transportation and hotel accommodations. Preparing financially will help you enjoy the event without unnecessary stress.

1. SAVE UP!

2. STAY HYDRATED!

Amid the excitement of running between panels, photo ops, and vendor halls, it’s easy to forget to drink water. Staying hydrated is vital, especially in crowded convention centers where it can get hot and stuffy. Bring a refillable water bottle if allowed—many conventions have water stations where you can stay refreshed for free. If outside drinks aren’t permitted, factor the cost of purchasing bottled water into your budget. Dehydration can lead to fatigue or headaches, which can ruin your day. Keep water handy and take sips throughout the day to maintain your energy.

3. EAT!

Food may not be the first thing on your mind when you’re exploring an anime convention, but skipping meals can lead to exhaustion. Pack snacks like protein bars, trail mix, or fruit for quick energy boosts. If you’re attending a multi-day event, plan for at least two full meals a day. Convention food is often pricey, so research nearby restaurants or grocery stores for more affordable options. If your hotel has a microwave or fridge, consider bringing easy-to-prepare meals. Keeping your body fueled ensures you can fully enjoy the event without burning out.

4. REST!

It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a con but remember to pace yourself. Conventions often span several days, and trying to do everything at once can lead to burnout. Schedule time to rest, whether it’s sitting in a quiet corner, taking a break in the hotel lobby, or finding a spot to people-watch. Use this time to recharge your devices, organize your purchases, or check out the event schedule for what’s next. Resting doesn’t mean missing out—it means ensuring you have the stamina to enjoy every part of the convention.

5. EMERGENCY KIT!

Cosplay is one of the highlights of conventions, but costumes are often delicate and prone to mishaps. Packing an emergency kit can save the day. Include essentials like needles, thread, fabric glue, double-sided tape, safety pins, and extra materials for quick fixes. Think about the unique needs of your costume—if you’re wearing a wig, bring a comb and extra bobby pins. If your outfit involves props, pack duct tape or adhesive. A little preparation can save you from a costume disaster and keep your experience stress-free.

6. BRING CASH!

While many vendors accept credit and debit cards, technical issues can arise, and not all booths are equipped with card readers. ATMs at conventions are often in high demand and can run out of cash or charge hefty fees. Avoid disappointment by bringing a reasonable amount of cash with you. It’s especially important for securing autographs or buying small items like prints or pins. Carry your cash in a secure wallet or bag to avoid losing it in the hustle and bustle of the crowd.

7. BE RESPECTFUL!

Conventions are a shared experience, so mutual respect is crucial. Always ask permission before taking photos of cosplayers or their costumes. Be patient in long lines and courteous to staff and volunteers—they’re working hard to make the event enjoyable for everyone. When interacting with special guests, maintain proper etiquette. A simple “thank you” goes a long way, and asking before initiating physical contact, like a hug, is a must. Respecting personal space and boundaries will ensure everyone has a positive experience at the con.

8. PRACTICE GOOD HYGIENE!

Conventions can be crowded and physically demanding, so personal hygiene is essential. Start each day with a shower and apply deodorant. If you’re prone to sweating, carry travel-sized deodorant or body wipes for freshening up throughout the day. Good hygiene isn’t just for your benefit—it’s also considerate of those around you. Nobody wants to remember an amazing convention experience tainted by bad smells. Staying clean and fresh will help you feel confident and comfortable.

9. ASK BEFORE TAKING PHOTOS

Cosplayers work hard on their costumes, and they deserve your respect. Always ask before taking photos, whether they’re posing in a group or walking the convention floor. If someone says no, respect their decision and move on. On the flip side, if someone asks for your photo, you’re free to decline, but be polite. Interactions like these contribute to the overall camaraderie of the convention and create a positive atmosphere for everyone involved.

10. HAVE FUN!!!

At the end of the day, conventions are about celebrating your love for anime, comics, and geek culture. Don’t stress about trying to do everything. Focus on what excites you most, whether it’s attending panels, meeting your favorite creators, or shopping for collectibles. Take lots of photos, meet fellow fans, and immerse yourself in the vibrant energy of the event. With a little preparation and a positive attitude, your first anime convention will be an unforgettable adventure.
